What life experiences may have led you to a career in STEM?
My dad was a dairy farmer so I spent a lot of time around cows, which inspired my love for animals. Back when the L.A. Natural History Museum was free to the public, my family and I went a lot, so it further reinforced my love of animals and science.
What are some fun and interesting facts about your life with which students might identify?
I was ranked 16th in Pennsylvania for the Pokemon Trading Card Game. I trained dogs to sniff and detect things like cancer, explosives, people. I was a track runner in high school, a swimmer in college, and a rugby player as a postdoc.
My family is from Jalisco, Mexico. My hometown is Ontario, California.
